Lab Animals

What are Laboratory Animals
Unlike domestic animals or pets, laboratory animals are intended for use in teaching, research, testing and in some cases when animals have specialized genetic, anatomic, metabolic or physiological conditions. The term “laboratory animals” could include both domestic and wild animals used for food and fiber production. Sometimes, these animals are also kept as pets. These animals are also purpose-bred for their intended use in research.

Purpose of Laboratory Animals
Many people disagree with the necessity of using animals in experiments. We believe every animal experiment should be useful or justified on an individual basis. The principal goal of every experiment or research needs to be the replacement of animals with humane alternatives. Laboratory animals are used to:

  • Develop and test medicines and vaccines for animals or humans
  • Study the functionality of their bodying how animals’ and humans’ bodies function
  • Assess the effect of chemicals, such as pesticides, on the living beings and the environment

Caring for Laboratory Animals
Laboratory animals are often taken care of by veterinary professionals based on their experience and training. Although basic veterinary education may offer the skills and information required to take care of laboratory animals, the complexity and laboratory environment that these animals need to be kept in requires additional training and experience. Veterinarians that undertake these practices demonstrate their competency via certifications from an established authority that imparts specific skills and knowledge.

Need for Laboratory Animal Testing
In the laboratory, animals may suffer inadvertent effects of research and testing, which may impact the animal’s health. It may be difficult to identify what the animal is suffering from unless the animal is tested and a detailed report is generated explaining the animal’s condition. It is quite common for laboratory animals to experience these issues and constant monitoring and treatment is essential to keep the animal in a healthy state.
